What are the best onsen cities to visit that would fit within a 14 day itinerary which includes Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka?
Presently and in no particular order, we have whittled down to:
  1. Atami
  2. Beppu
  3. Hokkaido edit: Noboribetsu is where we are thinking and generally included Hokkaido since we de interested in learning about the history and culture of the area as a whole while also experiencing the onsen.
  4. Nikko
While the onsen that are closest to Tokyo or Osaka seem ideal, I have been doing a bunch of reading on Hokkaido and would love the opportunity to go there. Anyone have thoughts on if it is worth the trek? It seems like the best option for travel would be flying instead of taking the bullet train. I would appreciate any feedback. We will be in Japan late November and early December.
UPDATE: I appreciate all of the responses and based on the feedback, totally changed the itinerary to include the Japanese Alps as the long route before going to Kyoto and Osaka. I took into consideration many of your thoughts regarding the type of onsen experience we were looking for. And, decided on going to Shibu Onsen. By the time I started looking into Kinosaki, many of the ryokan were already booked.

Hi together,
this is not a really thought through post, but I was wondering if you can recommend some specific ryokans in japan with a private onsen. Currently my girlfriend and I are planning to visit japan in oct-nov next year for 2-3 weeks. Ideally the ryokan would be located somewhere which is in reach of public transport but also with a view into nature.
I was looking in the web and the reccomendations there couldnt be found on sides like booking or expedia or something. Am I doing something wrong here?
We probably want to stay for 2-3 nights and have a relaxing and smartphone-detoxing, stay :)
Any reccomendations highly appreciated. Have a great day!
